jalan-jalan carik pasal (14th - 15th Apr 2007)
|
|
last weekend, to celebrate my not-resigning from ibm, i decided to take a roadtrip with my beloved neo; destination: unknown. luckily for me, tirah was also in the mood to go somewhere (destination still not decided). since peroz had nothing to do that weekend, i dragged her along with us. we decided to drive along the coastal road of selangor-perak. the mission: find anything/place of interest and stop by. method: look for the sign boards.
the funny thing was, by the time we set out from klang, it was already 6pm (we had a late lunch) and rain had started to pour.. we found no signboards of interest, except for the fireflies watching in kg kuantan, kuala selangor. rainy season-- no fireflies. so we drove on until we reached teluk intan. by this time, peroz and tirah were already restless. and since peroz was the one driving, she vetoed all of us and took us all to lumut.
ahh.. lumut.. the gateway to pangkor island. i spent some part of my childhood there.. it was a sleepy town, except for the navy base. now, the local government is promoting lumut as a tourist attraction; the whole place revamped!
we reached lumut at 10pm. i got us all checked in the orient star hotel, room with seaview. i called my brother, didnt expect him to be around since he already told my mom that he'd be going sailing. luckily, he just got back and saved my neck -- now i had a reason to go to lumut after all, so my mom couldnt say anything
we had dinner at the bistro, teluk batik. menu: seafood. my brother was the one who recommended that restaurant. overall, the food was okay. the place was featured in TV3's 'Jalan-jalan cari makan'.
the next morning, after breakfast, my brother arrived at the hotel to pick us up. Then he took us for a tour in the navy base. for me, it was like a trip down the memory lane. so much had changed. we left that place when my dad was transferred to KL in 1994. for peroz and tirah.. well i dunno... but i think it was an eye opener for them to see where and how the men in white (or blue.. depends, white uniform for land, blue uniform for sea) work and live. and this trip also made me realise how much i appreciate my brother for continuing the family tradition to become a navy. ajim, i'm really proud of u!!
after that, we went for some souvenir hunting and makan2 around the lumut waterfront area. lumut is also well-known for its sea products. after brunch with my brother, it was time to head for home.
it was a leisurely drive. we stopped by some mango stalls in lekir; one of the best place in perak to get mangoes. somewhere between teluk intan and sabak bernam, we discovered a big sign board by the road side mentioning kelong resort.. i dont know for sure what a kelong is, but what i can imagine is, it must got something to do with fishing or fish-breeding or something like that.. from its description, it says there that its a haven for anglers.. well, this piqued our curiosity, so we decided to follow the signboard.. after about 15 minutes drive, we arrived at a hidden beach called bagan nakhoda omar (BNO beach). it was a fine breezy afternoon so we parked our car right in front of the beach and took a nap.. well, actually tirah did. me and peroz were busy ogling some odd-looking, amphibious fish perching on the rocks near the water, which peroz called 'ikan belacak'. (which i later googled and found out ikan tembakul=ikan belacak, english name: mudskipper).
after about an hour rest, we continued our journey home. still in sabak bernam (i think), there were some stalls selling corns, mangoes, papayas etc. i really recommend to try the corn-in-cup sold here, it was really undescribably yummy!
6pm, we reached the town of tg karang. upon recommendation from my brother, we stopped for dinner at a restaurant called satay hut. the satay there is twice as big as the one sold at other places, which cost only 70 sen each (vs. 60 sen in KL).
we arrived peroz's place at teluk panglima garang at about 9pm.

Yeppp!! Thats rite.. We did have a picnic at Titiwangsa Lake Garden!
I think many people are not aware that Titiwangsa LG is a good spot to have a picnic.. Plus the latest attraction, "Eye on Malaysia" ferris wheel.. its a good place to spend time with our loved ones..
So basically the idea was this: we wanted to get together and do something different, so we decided to have a picnic pot-luck style on Feb 24th there. There were 6 of us (left): me, odeng, peroz, tirah, ban n ayie. There were a lot of talking (read: gossiping), eating and also usha-ing dating couples there. Fun fun fun!!
p/s: tirah broke the record for being the first to arrive..

Taipei 101
Taihen omatase shimashitaaa!!
Finally, Taiwan pics uploaded.. this entry takes about 3 weeks to get updated, hope its well worth the wait.. so here goes..
somewhere in september, bought my tickets to taiwan during MATTA fair in KL. my dad got some work to do in taichung for a month, so i decided to tag along..
Nov 23, 2006 -
Armed with my passport, air tickets, a couple of credit cards and whatever mandarin i learned during 6 years of school (english is not yet widely spoken in taiwan), i boarded the china airlines flight 656 from KL to taipei at a little after 2pm. Arrived chiang kai sek international airport taipei at about 7pm. my parents and my lil sis were already waiting for me at the aiport. we took the express bus from the airport to taichung (an almost 2-hrs journey) and reached taichung at about 1030 pm. it was another 10 mins drive from the bus station to the apartment where my family were staying. my first impression about this country? taiwanese drivers are a whole lot worse than malaysians!!
Nov 24, 2006 -
Went to the Taichung mosque for friday prayers. on the way back, the friendly taxi driver gave us a brief city tour. after that, just lazed around watching tv..
Nov 25, 2006 -
went window shopping in the city center. taichung is the third larget city in taiwan. from one end to the other end of the city takes about 1 hour drive.
Nov 26, 2006 -
Dr Ooi, our host in taichung brought us to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village in Nantou, about 1.5 hrs drive from taichung. spent the whole day here. its a theme park with all the rides and attractions like roller coaster, water ride, etc which also showcases the lifestyle, crafts and other information about aboriginal people in taiwan. surprisingly, the aborigines in taiwan are, to put it mildly, all good-looking. hehehehe.. i especially enjoyed the cultural show featuring men in loin cloths. hahhahaa.. an educational and fun trip, i would say..
Nov 27, 2006 -
that time of the month.. in bed the whole day doing nothing. total relaxation!
Nov 28, 2006 -
went hunting for some souvenirs for roni, cherry and basco at the hypermarket nearby. did some googling for places to go in taipei the following day.
Nov 29, 2006 -
my dad had some business in taipei so hurrah.. taipei it was! departed taichung in the morning riding the university van. taipei is located north east of taichung, some 140km away. 1.5 hours on the highway, we then checked ourselves in YMCA hotel taipei. after lunch, took the MRT (thats what subways are called here) to Taipei city hall station to check out Taipei 101, currently the tallest building in the world. the number 101 is because the building has 101 stories above ground. its 509m high, surpassing the Petronas twin towers by 57m. like the twin towers, taipei 101 houses shopping malls and offices. some banana crepes and window shopping later, off we went to Chinese Handicraft Mart (MRT National Taiwan University Hospital station exit no2). another perfect place for shopping addicts like my mom (me excluded.. hehehhehe)
Nov 30, 2006 -
me and my sis took the MRT from our hotel (taipei main station) to jiantan station. from there, we took the free shuttle bus to Miramar Entertainment park, where the Miramar ferris wheel is located on the top floor of the building. its said that this ferris wheel is the second largest in the world, after London Eye. its our first ferris wheel ride ever!
after miramar, we went back to the hotel and together with my mom, we went to the chinese handicraft mart, again. seemed like without my dad, my mom enjoyed this trip to the bazaar more! hehehhe..
after my dad concluded his business, we went back to taichung, this time by train. the taipei railway station is just 3 mins walk from our hotel. very convenient!
Dec 1, 2006 -
friday prayers at the taichung mosque again. this time, i had the chance to sample the local dish prepared by the local muslim community there. we were told by the imam that there are a total of 6 mosques in taiwan and since this mosque is the only one in this area, muslims from all over taichung and its viccinity come to this mosque for the friday prayers, some set out very early in the morning. because of that, the mosque served lunch for free so that people dont have to perform their prayers on empty stomach. how nice..
Dec 2, 2006 -
treasure hunting at the Jade Market. this place sells a wide variety of jade, jewelry, antiques, pottery, paintings and everything chinese. it is open only on fridays, saturdays and sundays. here i learned that the chinese character of jade (玉) originates from the character for king (王) and a dot to represent stone, hence jade is the stone of kings, or something like that. in the evening, we went for a shopping spree at the Taichung Central. we were told that a must visit shop here is the Hom Tai Furniture shop located at the 5th floor. all sorts of taiwanese souvenirs sold here, not only furnitures. While we were browsing through the shop, the owner of the shop, Mr Lin, approached my dad and said that something was not right with my dad's posture. He claimed that he can remedy that using an ancient kungfu art of his family (of which he is the 7th generation). its something like massage but it's not actually a massage. Mr Lin said that he wouldnt accept payment if the problem with my dad's posture is not fixed. to cut a long story short, his claim was proven and my dad happily paid him.
Dec 3, 2006 -
surprise surprise.. my friend Ise suddenly pinged me through YM and told me that he was in Tainan and would like to visit Taichung. he arrived taichung a little after midnight and then in the morning, we went to the Jade Market (again). then it was time to pack all the stuff i bought because sadly, its time to go home.
Dec 4, 2006 -
boarded the bus to the airport at 3 am with my dad. arrived the airport at 5 am then my dad left for some business in taipei. spent the last of my taiwan dollars buying tissues (its the only alternative since what i had left was not enough to buy even a drink). departed CKS airport for KLIA at about 8:30 am. my journey ended in klia when i arrived home at about 1 pm.
-THE END -
