happy birthday, mama!
|
|
we celebrated our mom's 56th birthday yesterday, feb 10th, at home.
(absent: ajim)
- the lady who turned 56 -
to mama:-
may your smiles never left your face, especially now that you have retired so no more work-related worries;
may your line & wrinkles don't show too much, else you have to spend more on beauty products;
may happiness be with you always, and allah's love and blessings;
may you not get tired with us and our 12 cats, now that you have all the time in the world to be with us -
just sit back, relax and enjoy every moment that we spend together.
you are constantly in our thoughts, our prayers for you for every second that tick away..
happy birthday, mama!

happy new year 2008

year-end vacation. i took an extra day leave but no destination to spend the hols at. on a whim, texted tirah, "lets go to JB." to which she replied, "OK!"
so JB it was.
the morning before departure, i met with kuma-chan, and told him about our weekend plan. since he'd be in JB as well, he suggested singapore to be added in the itinerary. great idea! never been to singapore before, except for transits at changi airport.
so off we drove to JB on saturday, Dec 29th. (tirah ponteng keje!!! ) stopped by kota tinggi to pick odeng up, had lunch, changed our money (got 300 RM = 120 singdol) then went straight to JB and checked in naza hotel (recommended by boy, thanks!).
730pm, kumachan picked us up at the hotel and before we knew it, we were in singapore! the itinerary for the night: singapore night safari.
< christmas in the air?? >
the last time i went to a zoo was like 12 or 15 years ago - our class trip to zoo negara. even though i found the animals cute, i found myself unable to tolerate the smell, thus me not visiting any zoo for such a long time. i've heard so much abt the night safari in singapore, and since this trip was not planned, so i decided to give it a try, having no expectation whatsoever.
first, the "creatures of the night" show. nocturnal animals, anyone? fun, entertaining and educational. even adults need the education on conserving the nature! it was worth the 30-mins long queue. catch it if u can. but make sure u turn off your camera flash if u want to take pics!
< "creatures of the night" show >
the highlight of the visit was the tram ride, which we boarded for free by sheer chance (entrance ticket can include/exclude the tram ride).. hehehhe.. the secret: catch the last tram ride at the very last minute, and run towards it like u are being chased by a cheetah! anyway, the night safari was superb! i felt like i was brought to a magical tranquil world, where there was nothing else in this world but me, the jungle, and the (some soon to become extinct) animals. one important message from the creatures (and the guides too!) of the night safari, to the citizens of the planet earth: REUSE, REDUCE & RECYCLE!!
we came back to JB well after midnite, had supper and then zzzzzzz at the hotel.
sunday, dec 30th. the next morning after a very very heavy breakfast, had us checked out from the hotel, me and tirah took a taxi from JB to singapore, packed with 1 mineral water bottle each, some chips and chocolate for lunch. the fare from JB is 10 ringgit. We were dropped at Bugis Juction, then took another taxi to Sentosa island.
I knew singapore is expensive, but i didnt expect it to be THAT expensive! Nothing much could be done here at sentosa island, except for some sightseeing on top of the double decker bus (FOC, thank god!), some picture-snapping, some souvenir-hunting, and some 4-D show (which was mediocre actually). to see other attractions means to spend more money, and we didnt think it was worth it.
bored and hungry, upon kumachan's suggestion, we decided to give the merlions a visit. it was already raining very heavily when we flagged a taxi and left sentosa island. the merlion is a statue of a lion head with fish tail resting on a crest of waves, a very well-known symbol of singapore.
<ladies & gents, i present u.. THE MERLION!! >
before we catch another taxi back to JB at bugis junction, attracted by the so many discount signs, tirah dragged me into the mall there. by this time, i had only 22 dollars left, out of which 10 dollars were for the taxi fare to JB. so hardly in any position for some serious shopping, right? hehehe.. besides, i looked at the price tags (went to DP and topshop), not much different from KL. kesian tirah.. she was looking forward to some shopping in spore, but ended up buying nothing. well, not that i discouraged her! hehehe..
by 7pm, we were famished! had nothing but potato chips and toblerone since after breakfast. we couldnt wait to reach JB for dinner, so we ended up ordering some mini burger and fries and cola for 3 dollars at the KFC. halal rupanya kfc kat spore.. one of the most delicious meal ever, or so i thought. hihihi... lapar sgt x leh pk benda lain..
we spent the night at enni's house at utm skudai. actually, we enjoyed 2 nights of enni and hubby apai's gracious hospitality. tenkiuss dahlingsss!!
monday, dec31st. we slept until noon. very tired after our adventure. after lunch, i texted syaido, asking him whether he knew where the otak-otak factory is located. its in kempas, and he brought us there. very very cheap. then, we drove to dataran for some special steamboat. delicious!!
< enni & tirah.. look at the food behind them! >
and for new year countdown, we spent the night watching fireworks display from our bed at enni's house.
tuesday, Jan 1. drove to kota tinggi to fetch odeng. odeng brought us to a very famous food stall in kota tinggi. Belangkas Mahkota is famous for its exotic dish: belangkas, or horseshoecrab in english. i was told that the word Mahkota is because the crown prince of johor is a frequent patron. and seems like this place was also featured in tv3's jalan-jalan cari makan.. cool.. never had belangkas before so we were very eager to try. very delicious! it tasted like crabmeat. we also tried siput gonggong, i dont know what this is called in english, but it's a kind of snail, like escargot. yummy!
< siput gonggong ker gonggol aa? >
< odeng & food >
after lunch, back to KL. on the way back, stopped at ayer hitam to get some flower vase for mama.. end of holiday.
a brand new year. a brand new start.

i used to think that there's nothing much to do in langkawi except for shopping. this had been ingrained in me since i first learned to talk (hehheeehe), which partly explained why i never set foot on the island, until last weekend (nov 22 - nov 25). it turned out i was wrong about langkawi. heck! i was wrong about so many things before going to langkawi..
the bottom line is:
THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO DO IN L.A.N.G.K.A.W.I. !!!
holidaying in langkawi was very much a spur-of-the-moment decision. 23rd nov was labor day holiday in japan, i needed dental treatment (broke my teeth the previous week), and odeng needed a break from whatever it was she needed a break from. i needed the holiday too!!
so i texted my future sister in law 5 days before departure, who happens to be the resident dentist of the local health clinic in langkawi. she said okay, so okay it was. booked online flight tickets (luckily, price still within our means), then off we went to LANGKAWI!!!!
me and odeng boarded the last air asia flight of the day to the island on thursday. my future SIL picked us up at the airport and took us to her house, which was like a stone throw away from the airport. then, straight to zzzzzzzzz land..
the next day after breakfast, first in the itinerary was Langkawi Cable Car. we rode the gondola up to the top of the mountain, more than 700 m above sea level. it was quite a windy day; the air was fresh and cool.. we spent some time enjoying the panaromic view of the andaman sea, and also enjoying the RM3-per-can 100 plus drink. there were also other attractions besides cable car ride, such as shopping, animal feeding (i fed deers and rabbits), and shopping (again ).
< on top of the world!! >
next, we had some splashing good time at temurun waterfall. there wasnt many people around. the area was clean. air sejuk, jernih.. so apa lagi.. skinny-dipping la.. hahha.. thats why u wont find us in any of the waterfall pics here..
then, we checked out some of the beaches nearby. first went to see pantai pasir tengkorak - one of langkawi's well-kept secret. very beautiful beach, still relatively unknown among tourists. mostly locals who flock there. we didnt dive into the water though, being freshly out from the waterfall.. eheheh.. then some further drive up, we arrived at pantai pasir hitam. yep, as the name goes, the sand is black, due to its mineral content. there's a plaque planted on the beach with the explanation on why the sand is black - got to see it yourself!
< pantai pasir hitam >
pantai cenang was next. this is the liveliest beach of all, tourists everywhere. and shops and eateries... hehehhehe.. we hunted for the best snorkeling package offered by operators stationed at this beach. PM me if u want to know which one we took ya!
after that, we headed to kuah jetty, for shopping and makan2, and also a visit to the giant eagle gracing langkawi's skyline. did u know, the name langkawi is derived from the words "lang" which means eagle, and "kahwi" which means brown or red in ancient languages, thus "LANGKAWI". yep.. eagles are still abundant in this island.
< the eagle has landed >
the following day, we swam with groupers and barracudas and also little nemos at the pulau payar marine park. did snorkeling and diving. simply said: PARADISE!! (to anyone planning to do similar activities, make sure u have underwater cameras - they even sell disposable ones! check out the airport photo shop.)
and then that night, some pampering time - massage, manicure, pedicure.. aaahhhhh.. just walk along pantai cenang, u'll find many spas and health centers. we went to the one next to underwater world. 最高だったぁぁぁぁぁ~
final day there, we went shopping for gamat products in the morning. oh before that, dental treatment.. FOC!! (my last visit to the dentist was about 8 years ago - medical checkup for scholarship application.. hehehhe.. got perfect teeth maa.. why bother the dentist? hehehehe..) so now my teeth are as good as new.. hehehehe.. then after lunch, we hopped into a boat at tanjung rhu for the mangrove tour at kilim geoforest park. feeding eagles, visiting limestone caves with live bats sleeping inside, feeding stingrays at fish farm and then having late lunch of fresh seafood at the floating restaurant, and finally, riding the waves out to the open sea (the boat man let me n odeng took turns helming the boat, see pic below)!!
< yeeehaaaaaa!!! >
yeah.. we did have a wonderful time in langkawi. thank u, dear future SIL! glad that i went there...
coming up next: underwater pics!!

my bro's engagement - from putrajaya to gemencheh -
|
|
yepp... thats rite!! my little-but-not-so-little-anymore brother, ajim got engaged some time early this month.. and my oh my.. what a journey!! the house was located sooo remotely that i almost got a leg cramp driving. whatever it was, i enjoyed the lauk kampung served there.. hehehehhe.. maklum la.. yours truly was sooo jakun tengok jantung pisang rebus, coupled with sambal belacan, and then some gulai venison... practically devoured everything in sight!
we held a mini tahlil & doa selamat at home before we set out for the journey.. and some makan2 too.. departed putrajaya at 11 something am.. arrived gemencheh around 4pm.. i think i could reach batu buruk with the same amount of time.. hehehe.. ok exaggerated a bit.. never thot it could be that far though..
oh, and the engagement period is, i quote my dad:" mesti tak kurang dari setahun" unquote.
have i mentioned how big the entourage was? 8 cars altogether.. or was it 11? the mind boggles still..
p/s: hehehehehe.. 義理の妹??信じられないなぁぁぁぁ。。。。

uh uh.. catchy title..
last weekend, the 5 of us - odeng tirah peroz ban & me - went for a little trip to kuala terengganu. the mission: attend our buddy, enni's wedding, and to raid kedai pasar payang!!
so many things happened during the trip - good things and bad things.. but all memorable ones.. something that we shall not forget for years to come..
the highlights:
* may 26th, saturday - departed for kuala terengganu in ban's harrier at 5 am.. 10 mins after we started, odeng realised that she left the map in the house.. had to turn back and fetch the map.
- me n feroz.. dlm harrier -
- us and harrier @ pantai teluk mak nik-
- faces after 5 hours driving -
* arrived k trg at noon. had lunch at restoran terapung puteri near pasar payang. nasi putih + ketam separuh badan + sotong 3 ketul = RM 11.50!! i almost had a heart attack. dah la mahal, x sedap lak tu.. its like a daylight robbery!! verdict: definitely a must-not go.
* shopped till we dropped at pasar payang after lunch.. tudung, songket, batik sutera, batik lepas.. u name it, we've bought it.. got out of pasar payang with empty purses.. talk about the allure of pasar payang..
- us at pasar payang -
- here's to enni n apai!! -
* checked in primula hotel at 6pm. were terribly exhausted. after asar prayers, all of us got into bed and slept till 9 pm. our intention was to witness enni's akad nikah ceremony which was held after isya prayers.. we missed that.
- after akad nikah -
* reached enni's house at 10:30pm. she's already apai's wife by then. never seen a bride who really enjoyed her wedding before.. enni looked uki-uki waku-waku.. sooo happy for her. i also enjoyed the makan2.. gulai nangka + sambal belacan + ikan masin = bliss! after apai had gone to join his family, we kidnapped enni out of the house (still in bridal attire) and enjoyed eating fried ice cream together at pantai batu buruk. we returned her to her family at 1 pm. (before arriving enni's house, there was a li'l fiasco when we were looking for directions to her place - tirah's dialogue when asking a girl we found at the roadside:" dik dik, tanah perkuburan kat mana?" we were speechless!! )
- us taking enni out for fried ice cream -
- us.. and the last pic of harrier -
* may 27th, sunday - we were getting ready to go out for breakfast at abt 9 am when ban discovered that harrier's gone. it was not there where we parked it at the hotel carpark. vanished into thin air.. without a trace.. stolen. period. the rest, is history.
* managed to get the hotel's shuttle bus to send us to breakfast. the driver brought us to restoran mat binjai (i forgot the name of the road, but its somewhere near the bangunan2 kerajaan) where they served nasi berulam a la nasi padang. scrumptious delicious yummy delectable feast! no wonder it was featured in TV3's Jalan2 cari makan! Verdict: a must-try!
- us, minus odeng @ restoran mat binjai -
* noon.. again the hotel driver sent us to enni's wedding feast. enni was such a radiant bride.. lucky apai.. however, there were also some other mishaps happening:- baju koyak la kasut putus la macam2 la budak2 ni.. the hotel driver again fetched us from the wedding, and sent us to the bus station to buy bus tickets to KL, and then he sent us to pasar payang. pasar payang again! i wish i can move pasar payang to KL! - credit to the hotel for a wonderful service, though i must say, they should improve on the bathroom part -
- gadis2 penunggu pintu (my personal fave)-
- retro pose from peroz n tirah -
- us gals with the bride n groom -
- bercanda di pasiran pantai batu buruk -
* last night in K Trg.. we were met with Ja, and he brought us to dinner at kuala ibai, famous for its air buah saddam hussein. food is good. fruit juice also recommendable.. Ja then drove us around town to enjoy the night view of k trg.
- masjid terapung -
- batu bersurat..landmark of k trg -
* may 28th, monday - 10-hours bus ride. reached home at 10:30pm. my oh my.. what a journey.. final straw when peroz had a near accident on her way back home after she sent us home.
thus, the title above.
- us in front of the hotel -
